Preheat oven to 400F and score the chestnuts so that excess steam can escape (and not pop open).
Place on a pie plate or cookie sheet and cook for 30 - 40 minutes until tender. To check if they are tender, crack one open using an oven mitt (they are very hot!) and check to see that the nut meat inside is soft all the way through.
Once cooked, let cool for 5 to 10 minutes before cracking them open to eat.
