A twist on a classic, blood orange margaritas are delicious and refreshing. Plus they are easy to make and perfect for date night, girls night or batched for a party.
If I had to choose one cocktail to drink for the rest of my life it would be a margarita. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and sour, plus it is so versatile! You can change the flavour profile so many ways: different tequila, different sweet/sour ratio by changing up the citrus/fruit and sweeteners, and you can even add some surprises like vanilla!
Now, citrus season may be coming to an end, but I can still find some beautiful blood oranges at the grocery store so I thought I’d share this recipe because I think more people need to jump on the orange train.
Why I love This Blood Orange margatritas
In the winter months I absolutely go nuts diving into orange season. I’m not talking your straight and simple navel oranges that are available year round. I’m talking beautiful cara cara oranges and, of course, blood oranges. If you see bags of them, buy them. You’ll fall in love with their crimson ruby speckled interior and their sweetness.
Recipe Notes
Adjust the sweetness. I personally don’t like a margarita that is too sweet, while others like it more sweet. Feel free to either adjust the quantity of sweeter used based on how sweet your blood oranges are. Or, if you are using a simple syrup, adjust the ratio of sugar and water. Personally, I keep a 2:1 water to sugar simple syrup in my fridge for cocktail making.
Play with the recipe. Want a spicy blood orange margarita? Add jalapeno or serano slices to give it a punch. Do you have super sweet blood oranges? Try and mellow it out by replacing the tripe sec with some yummy bitter Campari!
